====== WEEK 12 19.12.17 ====== ===== Skin Electronics ===== **Katia Vega** was the lecturer this week. She introduced us to this amazing skin electronics world and some of its application by explaining some projects developed by Beauty Technology. Furthermore, she encouraged us to replicate some of the projects she explained during the lecture using components such as RFIDs or NeoPixels. ---- [[http://wiki.textile-academy.org/fabricademy2017/classes/skinelectronics|Here]] you can find the documentation about this class. **The challenge** for this week is to create a Skin Masquerade Party, Twinkle Nails or similar applying the components described in the documentation class in a creative way. Some criteria that will be evaluated are: * Creativity and uniqueness (25%)
\\ * Algorithm and circuit complexity (25%)
\\ * Quality (20%)
\\ * Functionality (20%)
\\ * Individual performance (10%) ==== PROJECT ==== Unfortunately, we did not be able to get the components required to make a Skin Masquerade Party nor a Twinkle Nails so I decided to make a skin electronics on the breast inspired by creatures living in reefs such as corals and seaweed. === Inspiration === I was inspired by corals and seaweed which mostly grow up in reefs. The diversity in colors they have will allow me to simulate the interactivity that I am looking for this project. The seaweed shape was represented on the bioplastic piece keeping the flexibility on it. {{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:002.jpg?nolink&420x235|002.jpg}}{{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:001.jpeg?nolink&352x235|001.jpeg}}{{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:00.jpg?nolink&251x235|00.jpg}}{{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:p02vk3nn.jpg?nolink&418x235}} **Materials** The piece & Bioplastic : * 36 gr. gelatin * 36 gr. glycerine * 180 ml. hot water * Container where the bioplastic will dry * Cardboard base piece * Masking tape 1/2'' Electronics: * Microcontroller: Lilypad * Electronic circuit LEDs * Lithium battery 3.7v * Sound sensor * Step-up module * Copper cable === The process === The piece: 1. Design the skin electronics piece. 2. Laser cut the piece on cardboard or paper to test the correct size on the breast. 3. Make the 2D design adjustments if necessary. 4. Size the area needed to make the bioplastic. Bioplastic: 4. Mix all the ingredients in hot water for 4 minutes 5. Let the mixture dry for 1 or 2 days. 6. Laser cut the bioplastic piece. Electronics: 7. Make the electronic schematic circuit. 8. Test the circuit before to put it inside the bioplastic 9. Join the circuit to the bioplastic piece 10. Set the complete piece over the breast of the model. 11. Test the sound sensor with claps or whistles 12. Programming time **Finally** 9. Test the complete piece with music. 10. Let the magic starts. === Design === {{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:thumb_img_0012_1024.jpg?nolink&600x600|thumb_img_0012_1024.jpg}} {{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:screen_shot_2017-12-07_at_6.03.49_am.png?nolink&1024x640}} {{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:screen_shot_2017-12-07_at_6.09.40_am.png?nolink&1024x640}} {{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:screen_shot_2017-12-07_at_7.03.09_am.png?nolink&1024x640}} {{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:screen_shot_2017-12-07_at_7.03.35_am.png?nolink&1024x640}} **Electronic schematic circuit** {{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:schematics_skin.jpg?nolink&1024x402|schematics_skin.jpg}} === Process and Fabrication === Bioplastic: {{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:05.jpg?nolink&500x500|05.jpg}}{{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:06.jpg?nolink&500x500|06.jpg}}{{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:07.jpg?nolink&500x500|07.jpg}} {{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:08.jpg?nolink&785x400|08.jpg}}{{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:01.jpg?nolink&600x400|01.jpg}} {{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:03.jpg?nolink&480x320|03.jpg}}{{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:02.jpg?nolink&480x320|02.jpg}}{{:fabricademy2017:students:eldy.lazaro:week12:09.jpg?nolink&500x320|09.jpg}} Look at this video to see the fabrication process and the performance created with the result of this skin electronics application.
