This class will focus on exploring material and coloring alternatives to the current ones. Ranging from natural dyes, using pigments and bacteria, to material biofabrication. Local recipes of DIY materials
Efficiency has been proved because of the absence of toxical mordents, the dyeing in a record time of 1 hour, with a cold cycle of dyeing, without waste and recycling the 100% of water.
The raw materials are sustainably proven, with no toxicity, coming from renewable sources.I choose to dye linen and pick the variety of different fruits and vegetables. And also I pick three different mordants to see differences in colors.
Materials That I used;
Dye Materials | Mordants | Fabrics |
Dry roses | Alum | linen |
Mulberry and strawberry | Salt | viscose |
pomegranate | Lemon | |
red onions | ||

This week as an assignment ı wanted work on Gelatine based bio-material and kombucha.
Please visit my Week8: Open Source Hardware: from fibers to fabric assignment to see my experimentation with bio-plastic
I wanted to make Gelatine-based biomaterial.Gelatin is a virtually colorless and tasteless water-soluble protein prepared from collagen and used in food preparation as the basis of jellies, in photographic processes, and in glue.
When ı was doing my assignment ı was in Turkey. My main aim to my and object from bio-based material that ı can use later on as a product. That's why the material that ı will do should be strong and long term used. I went to spice bazaar to looking for fibers. And also visited chemical stores in Turkey which they have a real variety of chemicals.
I bought materials that ı can use as fibers to hold my material. I prefer dried rose which smelling beautiful and wool yarn.
Then I choose my mold from the market.
After ı bought my materials ı decided to make earrings with my seashell molds.
Material | Amount |
Gelatin | x |
Glycerine | 2x |
I did not use water. Because ı want my material as possible as flexible like jellybeans.
A gelatine/glycerine based bioplastic with a very low level of glycerine
(1)
produces a hard, rigid plastic for creating solid objects.
Less glycerine: Hard, more brittle
More Glycerine: Soft and flexible
Too much: Sticky and slimy
How much you use water;
First I pour my material into Mold.
You do not have to use any silicon spray. 3 Days later my earing were ready.
I wanted to add also different fibers into bio-plastic.
For kombucha leather, ı used the recipe from here page 24
Material | Amount |
---|---|
Black Tea | 1 lt |
Sugar | 120 Gr |
Scoby | 1 |
kombucha is taking shape of your good.
İt was really easy to produce kombucha. I did not expect that much good result.
Scoby is basiccaly eating sugar inside of the black tea
