Last Week | Final Deliverable

In the end I didn't manage to test the CNC-3D printer, the genuine Arduino came too late to be able to relay on being able to finish that way. So instead I tried to focus my full energy in making a final 'proof of concept piece'.

Inspiration:

This is one of Banksy's works that I saw last August in the Moco Museum in Amsterdam. The image together with 'That Sugar Film' gave me an insight as to where to get the colours for my bioplastic, from the 'new nature' surrounding us everywhere.

For this week I made four small models, of which two didn't work out. I tried to go from 'abundant material use' to the most abstract slicing possible for a 'minimum amount of material' used.

Programs used:

Inspiration:

Martijn van Strien

Process:

I started of with recreating already existing modules, to get the hang of their working, to ultimately design my own.

This shows the improvements needed for the first design I made myself: Using the slits in the middle causes the double layer effect to be to tight, so this will be removed in the next version. Plus the connections where found to be not strong enough.…

From the 21st till 29th of October I had an exhibition at Mind the Step (Dutch Design Week 2017). You can check our project on: PerFlex.design. Which is a project on personalising 3D printed garments.

So who has seen Bladerunner 2049? I definitely did! Especially the raincoat that Joi was wearing. This translucent raincoat has been my inspiration. What I wanted to make is a translucent a-line raincoat with cut out triangles that become bigger near the end of the pattern.

Detailed Documentation Week 6

The idea for this week was to make a pouch out of combined techniques. I find this one of the most difficult weeks, since there are so many aspects to it, that it is definitely impossible to try them all.
So the ones that I found most interesting, are growing crystals and leather moulding, which is why I wanted to combine both. One side of the pouch would have grown crystals, the other moulded coins.

Exercise:

This week is about creating a tool (hardware) when the current tools are either not working to your liking or not existing yet. Our machine of choice is the CNC milling machine, of which we want to make a gigantic embroidery machine. We decided to work on this assignment as a group, since it is quite a lot of work and split all the tasks between the students. Me and Julia got to make the frame holder.

Exercise | IN & OUPUT design

For the first two days we got a small exercise: make a circuit of in and output of a already existing design. For this I choose the design of Eef Lubbers called Unlace. I think this is a very inspiring design of one possible way of how to use thermochromic ink in wearables. In her design instead of letting the heating be determined by the warmth of the environment, she programs copper wires going through a fabric tube dyed with thermoc…

Ideation | Initial Idea

Before this week I already formed an idea of what I wanted to make. It comes down to creating generative sewing patterns based on a bodyscan to prevent distortion of sublimated prints.

When I told people this no one asked any questions, came with far-fetched ideas of their own or told me about similar projects they known of. For me this is a huge red flag that the idea is not engaging enough. So I started to ask around for honest opinions…

Soft Robotics

Soft-robotics isn't new to me, a master student and another team of students had projects in this direction, which showed me some of the possibilities. This is however the first time for me to design a mould in 3D (Rhino) and to work with Ecoflex 00-30.

Skin Electronics | Inspiration

After the lecture I was extremely excited, this part of the 'wearables' is completely new to me. On internet I found this image done by the university of Tokyo:

Which reminded me of a Halloween make-up that I never got to in the end. So, I decided that it might be the right moment to try it now. Creating a robot layer.
