Assignment 2: Draft a 3D model of a selected body part

On the 03.10.2017 we had deepen the topic “Digital Bodies”. At the beginning Adiana introduced us into the topic by doing a presentation. Afterwards we learned about useful programs like Meshmixer , Fusion 360 (Slicer), Rhino ceros, Rhine ceros Grasshopper and at last Make Human.

However, in case of drafting resp. creating a 3D model certain technologies have to be considered. On Tuesday we had focussed more or less on two relevant techniques/devices.

1. 3D Scanner (Tablet)

The 3D Scanner is a useful device that is able to analyze a “real-world” object that gather data due to its shape and appearance. The gathered data can be used in order to construct a digital 3D model.

Relevant to our assumption to create a 3D model by combining useful programs and techniques, I decided to choose my whole right hand. Unfortunately at the first and second time it did not worked out immediately due to many gaps. Furthermore the surface was not smooth ( even if I had used Meshmixer to make it smoother the result would not sufficient). In the third attempt I decided to focus on the arm leap. In more detail I am interested in the ability of the movement of the elbow in general. Therefore Naida scanned my right arm.

2. Laser Cutter

The so-called Laser Cutter is a technology used for manufacturing application that cuts materials (e.g wood) with a laser. The laser optics and CNC (computer numerical control) are used to direct the material or the laser beam generated. The focused laser beam is directed at the material, which then either melts, burns, vaporizes away, leaving an restrict with a high-quality surface finish.

Thus I was not able to use the laser cutter on the 03.10.2017 because I had problems to download the programs Meshmixer and 360 Fusion Slicer. On Thursday it finally worked. So my first step was basically to import the data of my scanned body part, in this case my right arm. By doing so I decided to split my arm into upper and lower arm. As I mentioned before I put my focus on the arm leap and therefore I want to construct this part my own after using the laser cutter. Among others I used Meshmixer twice because I worked on the upper and lower arm separately. in the following you will the difference before and after working on Meshmixer.

Due to Meshmixer the surface is now more smoother and there are no particular parts that has been disturbed at the beginning ( as you can see in the before picture). After finishing this I used 360 Fusion Slicer.( https://fh-potsdam.github.io/doing-papercraft/slicer/ )
