ASSIGNMENT

Create samples of different techniques for scaffold

1. GROUP SAMPLES

A. WHAT: CRYSTAL GROWING

STEPS

1) MIX THE SALTS: Alum / Borax / Epson + Water in different proportions according to the properties of each salt.

2) ADD COLOR: Adding color to each sample of water + salt. We use acrylics (they don`t work), chinese ink and food coloring (work better but face)

3) ADD MATERIAL: Adding the materials for the crystal to get attach, like treats, fabric and wood sticks.

4) LEAVE: We wait for a few a hours. The alum crystals grow really fast.

5) TAKE AWAY: Take the material with the crystals and let them dry. You can put then into a new mix is you want bigger crystals.

B. WHAT: LEATHER MOLDING

STEPS

1) CREATE THE MOLD: We use foam to create a 3d mold, using the CNC milling machine. When it was ready, we put layers of shellac to make it waterproof.

2) SOFTEN THE LEATHER: After choosing the leather, we put it on cold water for a few hours so it`s gets softer.

3) MOLD: First, we put mold remover to the foam and vaseline. After, we try to mold the leather into the mold using the vacuum forming machine. It didn`t work the way we wanted. Then, we put the mold into de vacuum bag and use the normal vacuum machine. Finally, we put some staples so it stay in the shape.

4) LET DRY and REMOVE

2. PERSONAL SAMPLES

A. WHAT: CRYSTAL GROWING IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF FABRICS

I wanted to see how the crystals grow in different types of fabrics. I use alum because it grows faster, and for the fabrics, I choose burlap (2 types) and tulle. After comparing the results, both the burlap and the tulle works really good because they have space for the crystals to attach and grow. In the case of the burlap, it has an “open fiber” very porous so the small crystal can get attach really easy. In the case of the tulle, is because of the mesh.

B. WHAT: MOLDING AND CRYSTAL GROWING ON FABRIC

I wanted to try mixing the molding technique with the crystal growing on fabric, by putting some tulle on a 3D mold made on foam. I use a pvc fabric on top of the tulle, so I could determinate were I want the crystals to grow (they don`t grow on the pvc).

PROBLEMS

- After 2 days, I remove the mold from the water with crystals but sadly, nothing happen. I think the problem was that the tull was to near to the foam, so the crystals didn`t have the necessary space to attach and that the mold was to high, so the crystal went down.
